Gold was discovered in Trinity County in 1848, initiating a rush of miners and homesteaders.  You can imagine the lives of these early pioneers by visiting historic barns, living history demonstrations and museums.

Beekeeping Demonstration at Young Ranch

The Young Family Ranch in Weaverville is the remnant of a pioneer homestead.  The Ranch is owned by the Young Family Ranch Trust and managed by the Trinity County Resource Conservation District.   The Ranch hosts a series of events to educate children and their families about gardening, nutrition and natural resources, including the Summer Day Camp, Pioneer Day, a Pumpkin Patch and Cider Pressing.  For more information on upcoming activities, contact:

The Bowerman Barn, built in 1878, is an outstanding example of a late 19th century hand-crafted structure.  The barn was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  For more information and driving directions:

The Jake Jackson Museum in Weaverville describes the life of tribal members, gold miners and early settlers.  Blacksmith classes and demonstrations are a popular attraction.  The large outdoor history park also includes a relocated ditch tender's cabin, steam-powered Paymaster Mine stamp mill, and hydraulic monitor used to scour mountainsides for gold.  Construction will be completed in 2007 on an expanded carriage barn and wheelwright's shop.  Visit their website for more information:
